University Suspends Faculty Officer Over Alleged Sexual Harassment of 17-Year-Old Student

Clifford University, Owerrinta, Abia State, has suspended one of its faculty officers, Mr. Obioma Nwogwgwu, following allegations of sexual harassment brought against him by a 17-year-old female law student.

The allegation was formally reported to the university management and the Okpualangwa Divisional Police Headquarters by the Abia State chapter of Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, a civil rights advocacy group.

In response to the petition, the university, in a statement dated May 29, 2025, announced the indefinite suspension of Mr. Nwogwgwu, effective immediately. The statement noted that he will soon face the institution’s staff disciplinary committee.

“The said Mr. Obioma Nwogwgwu has been placed on indefinite suspension with effect from May 29, 2025,” the statement read. “He will be arraigned before a staff disciplinary committee of the university shortly.”

The management further assured the public that all academic results remain secure and are currently housed with the Registry. Students or individuals with concerns regarding results are encouraged to contact the Registry directly for clarification or resolution.

Reacting to the university’s swift action, the Director of Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation, Abia State Chapter, Marvelous Ochiegbu, expressed appreciation but urged for transparency, fairness, and accountability throughout the investigation process.

Speaking on Saturday, Ochiegbu emphasized the importance of including his organization in the investigative proceedings to prevent any form of cover-up. He also called on the university to ensure the safety and protection of the female student from any form of victimization.
