DSS Arrests Content Creator Over Comments on Fulani Herdsmen Killings in Enugu

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly arrested and detained Nigerian content creator, Evangelist Ebube Joseph, allegedly on the orders of Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, following his critical commentary on killings by suspected Fulani herdsmen in the state.
According to SaharaReporters, Joseph was initially held incommunicado for 10 days in an underground DSS facility, despite his deteriorating health. He was later granted bail but was rearrested upon visiting Enugu State, where he was secretly arraigned without access to legal counsel or notification to his family.
The arrest has sparked outrage over what many see as a clampdown on free speech and digital activism in Nigeria.
Confirming the development, fellow content creator, David—popularly known as MC Dave—told SaharaReporters that Evangelist Joseph is facing charges for allegedly defaming Governor Mbah. “An Anambra-based content creator that was whisked away by the DSS on the instruction of the Enugu Governor has been rearrested,” he said.
In a video shared on Facebook before his second arrest, Joseph recounted his ordeal, describing a terrifying 10-day detention. “DSS operatives stormed my residence at about 2am with four vehicles. They blindfolded me, handcuffed me behind my back, and detained me without explanation. My only offense was speaking about the Fulani herdsmen killings in Enugu and other parts of Nigeria,” he stated.
He insisted that his actions were driven by a moral obligation to speak out against injustice. “I committed no crime. I only used my platform to give a voice to the voiceless,” he said.
The incident comes amid rising insecurity in Enugu State. In just two weeks, at least 16 people have reportedly been killed in renewed attacks on Mgbuji and Agu-Amede communities in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.
The case has raised fresh concerns about press freedom, human rights, and the growing dangers faced by content creators and activists in Nigeria.
