AE-FUNAI English Dept Flags Off 2025 Tree Planting at Writers’ Village

The Department of English and Literary Studies, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ebonyi State, has flagged-off tree planting campaign in its Writers’ Village. The event, which was organized to commemorate the 2025 World Environmental Day, marked the beginning of activities in the Department of English and Literary Studies’ Writers’ Village.

Speaking at the event, the Acting Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Dr. Arua Oko Omaka noted that the main goal of the University’s Campus-Green Initiative was to build one of the most beautiful and eco-friendly campuses in Nigeria. He commended the Acting Head of Department of English and Literary Studies, Dr. Romanus Nwoma for initiating the idea of a Writers’ Village that would be eco-friendly, and remarked that tree planting is biblical and spiritual, for when one plants a tree, the person is not planting for today, but for generations to come.

Continuing, Dr, Oko noted that the idea of having a Writers’ Village aligned properly with AE-FUNAI’s vision of building a world-class citadel of learning, and extolled the Head of Department and his team for conceiving the idea of a Writers’ Village within the AE-FUNAI Green Area.

He observed that the trees would provide the serene environment that would give writers the inspiration and serendipity to think and generate creative ideas that would transform humanity.

Earlier at the event, while making his remarks, the Head of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Dr. Nwoma expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Elom for approving the department’s request to establish a Writers’ Village within the University’s Green Area.

He noted that the day marked the formal commencement of phased-activities to develop the Writers’ Village which would serve as an international centre of inspiration and a sanctuary to established national and international writers.

“The vision is to build a world-class immersive environment that drips with inspiration, a home to writers and scholars across the world”, he posited. He therefore requested that the trees be planted to the glory of God and to the service of humanity.

The highlight of the event was the tree planting sessions by Acting Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Head of Department and, staff and students at the Writers’ Village.
