Wike Dumps PDP and APC, Launches New Mega Party with Kwankwaso and Obi

Ahead of 2027 general elections, former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has officially severed ties with both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), announcing the formation of a new mega party alongside key political figures, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Peter Obi.

At a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday, Wike declared the birth of the new political alliance, which he described as “a third force born out of the frustration with the failures of both PDP and APC to provide credible leadership and national unity.”

The party, whose official name is expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks, is projected to bring together aggrieved politicians, technocrats, youth leaders, and civil society groups.

Wike, known for his blunt political style and influential grassroots network, stated that Nigeria was in dire need of “a fresh political alternative” that transcends the tribal, religious, and regional politics of the past. “We can no longer continue on this path of recycled leadership and empty promises,” he said. “It is time to build a nation that works for everyone, not just a privileged few.”

The new alliance brings together three of Nigeria’s most formidable political figures outside the ruling establishment. Former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who leads the Kwankwasiyya movement, and Peter Obi, the former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, both confirmed their partnership in the new venture.

Kwankwaso emphasized the need for ideological clarity and national cohesion. “This is not just about contesting elections,” he said. “This is about building a truly progressive platform that will return power to the people.”

Peter Obi, widely regarded as the face of Nigeria’s youth-driven political awakening in 2023, stated that the movement would focus on transparency, economic revival, education reform, and job creation. “What Nigerians need now is trust. We’re here to restore that trust and offer hope where there is despair,” he said.

Political analysts believe the emergence of this new mega party could significantly alter the political terrain, especially with widespread discontent over the economic hardship and insecurity that have persisted under the current administration. The coalition is expected to appeal strongly to younger voters, disgruntled members of the PDP and APC, and regions feeling politically alienated.

Though the party’s leadership structure and official name are yet to be fully disclosed, sources indicate that consultations are ongoing to bring in more political heavyweights, including governors, senators, and key influencers from the South-South, North-West, and South-East.

Reactions have begun to pour in from both the PDP and APC camps, with some dismissing the move as “a coalition of ambition” while others acknowledge the potential threat it poses to the status quo. A top APC chieftain, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “We’re watching them closely. It’s a desperate move, but it may resonate with the masses if they get it right.”
