WHO Urges US to Reconsider Withdrawal, Calls for Dialogue

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged the United States to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the global health body. WHO made this appeal in a statement on Tuesday via its official X account.
The organization expressed regret over the decision. It explained its critical role in global health and its past achievements in the United States which includes combating diseases, strengthening health systems, and responding to emergencies.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to exit WHO. He criticized the organization, claiming the US contributes more than China and stating that WHO had not served American interests effectively.
This is not the first time the US has attempted to leave WHO. During Trump’s first term, his administration accused the organization of being biased towards China during the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision was later reversed by former President Joe Biden.
The new order directs federal agencies to halt funding to WHO and identify alternative partners for global health initiatives. Trump’s administration also plans to review Biden’s 2024 Global Health Security Strategy.
WHO reminded the US of its long-standing contributions since becoming a founding member in 1948. It cited major achievements such as smallpox eradication and near eradication of polio as evidence of successful collaboration.
WHO concluded by expressing its desire to maintain a partnership with the US for the health and well-being of people worldwide.
