Video of Ebonyi Lawmaker Firing Gun in Public Sparks Outrage

A viral video allegedly showing Hon. Chinedu Ogah, the member representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, firing a pistol in public has sparked widespread outrage and demands for his immediate arrest.

In the video, which surfaced online over the weekend, the lawmaker appears to be wielding and discharging what is believed to be an English pistol in a non-combat, civilian setting.

The footage has triggered alarm among Nigerians who are questioning the legality of the act — and the silence of law enforcement.

Citizens and rights groups have accused the Nigerian Police Force of selective enforcement, pointing out that while critics of government policies are often swiftly arrested or harassed, powerful politicians appear to operate above the law.

“Why hasn’t Chinedu Ogah been arrested yet?” Ebonyi critic, Nwoba Chika Nwoba wrote. “Police won’t go after him now, it’s going after people who criticize government policies that they’ll be fast to do. Arrest Chinedu Ogah for illegal possession of firearm now!.”

Legal analysts say the public display and firing of a firearm without clear justification could constitute a violation of Nigeria’s firearms laws, which strictly regulate ownership and usage, especially in public places.

The incident has also raised concerns about public safety and impunity in the country’s political class. Nwoba warned, “If the police don’t go after Chinedu Ogah, I’ll buy my own pistol and show it in public too.”
