US Court Temporarily Blocks Trump’s Order to End Birthright Citizenship

A US federal court has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship.
The ruling was issued on January 23, 2025, by District Judge John C. Coughenour.
The executive order, which was set to take effect on 19th of February, 2025, faced legal challenges from attorneys general of 18 states as they filed lawsuits against it on 21st of January, 2025.
During a court hearing in Seattle, Justice Department lawyer Brett Shumate attempted to defend the order’s legality. However, Judge Coughenour interrupted him, questioning its constitutionality of the end Birthright Citizenship.
Coughenour criticized the executive order, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional.” He expressed concerns about its potential impact and questioned its legal foundation.
The judge stated that the order contradicts long-standing constitutional principles. He mentioned that such actions undermine the legal system and historical precedents.
President Trump signed the order on 20th of January, his very first day in office. He promised to take strong measures against immigration during his campaign.
In addition to the order, Trump deployed 1,500 troops to the US-Mexico border. Reports suggest that the number of deployed troops could increase to 10,000.
The Democratic officials who challenged the order have urged the court to expedite proceedings. They hope for a final ruling before the order’s intended enforcement date.
Legal experts believe the case could eventually reach the Supreme Court. They argue that the ruling may set a significant precedent for immigration policies in the US.
