Tinubu hails Obasanjo at 88

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, acknowledging his contributions to Nigeria’s development and his enduring influence in national and global affairs.
In a statement on Wednesday, Tinubu described Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader” whose impact on nation-building remains significant.
“Sometimes controversial, former President Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs have helped shape public policies and acted as a check on leadership,” Tinubu said.
He praised Obasanjo’s statesmanship, dedication to national unity, and commitment to peace and progress, praying for his continued strength and wisdom.
Tinubu describes Obasanjo as an “Ambassador of Global Peace” whose contributions to conflict resolution and governance advocacy have earned him widespread respect. Recalling Obasanjo’s role in ending the Nigerian Civil War, Tinubu noted that as a colonel in the Nigerian Army, Obasanjo received the instrument of surrender from Biafran Army Commander Col. Philip Effiong in 1970.
The President also commended Obasanjo’s leadership following the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed in 1976, particularly his role in overseeing the transition to civilian rule in 1979.
“General Obasanjo implemented critical policies and reforms that profoundly impacted the lives of many Nigerians. As head of state, he demonstrated a selfless commitment to national unity, peace, and progress,” Tinubu said.
He added that Obasanjo continues to wield significant influence both within Nigeria and internationally, advocating for good governance and Pan-Africanism through institutions such as the African Union and the United Nations.
“Few can deny his influence among the political elite at home, and he remains well-regarded abroad, where he continues to champion global peace and stability,” Tinubu stated.
