Patience Jonathan Testifies in Church How God Helped Her Overcome Doubts To Earn PhD

Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan has opened up about her challenging journey toward earning a PhD, sharing how divine guidance and determination helped her overcome doubt and obstacles.
Speaking during a testimony session at Streams of Joy International Church in Abuja, led by Pastor Jerry Eze, Dame Patience became emotional as she reflected on her academic pursuit.
“I came here to thank God for all His doings, all the wonderful work in my life, in my family,” she said, receiving applause from the congregation.
Recounting her academic background, she admitted to initially questioning her decision to return to school after her tenure as Nigeria’s First Lady.
“I did my NCE, my BSc, my Master’s. But when I picked up the PhD form, I doubted myself. I had already finished my career. I thought, ‘What am I going to do with a PhD now?’”
She said it was divine encouragement that pushed her forward: “God told me, ‘Go and try. If these children can make it, why can’t you?’ And I said, ‘But I’m mama oo!’”
Describing the journey as tough and humbling, Dame Patience said what was meant to be a three-year course felt like 40 years. She regularly travelled from Abuja to Port Harcourt, often staying for weeks at a time to attend classes.
“I was not ashamed oo. I would sit on benches with younger students, raise my hand in class to ask questions—even three times before I could understand. But I kept going.”
She said that with time and perseverance, she completed her coursework within two years.
Encouraging others not to give up on education regardless of their age, she said, “If Patience can make it, you too can make it. There is no age limit in education. Whether you are 10 or 100, just be determined.”
Dame Patience also revealed how she transitioned from being a staunch Anglican to worshipping at Pastor Jerry Eze’s church, a decision influenced by her children.
Her testimony, filled with humor, humility, and inspiration, drew laughter, applause, and admiration from churchgoers, as she urged others to believe in themselves and trust in God’s guidance.
