OAU Bans Early and Late Lectures After Student Protests

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has banned lectures before 8:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m. This decision follows student protests against irregular schedules affecting their well-being.
The university’s Registrar, K. A. Bakare, announced this directive in a statement on Friday, stating that all academic staff must adhere to the official lecture hours and avoid scheduling violations.
The statement also buttressed the importance of Lecture Free Week. It warned against holding classes or continuous assessments during this period, as it disrupts students’ academic balance.
OAU’s Students’ Union had earlier condemned 7:00 a.m. classes, Saturday lectures, and violations of Lecture Free Week. They described these practices as unacceptable and against university policies.
Students argued that the irregular schedules affect their well-being. They urged the administration to restore normalcy and ensure a proper balance between academics and personal life.
The union called on the university and the Division of Student Affairs to enforce the new regulations. They warned that failure to comply could lead to further student action.
Students were encouraged to report violations through their class representatives. The union assured them of continued advocacy for policies that protect their academic success and welfare.
