The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to evacuate Nigerian citizens currently stranded in Israel and Iran, following a dramatic escalation in hostilities between the two nations.

In a statement released Tuesday night, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Nigerian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran are actively coordinating efforts to facilitate the safe return of affected Nigerians.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that following the escalation of the crisis between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Government is finalising arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” the statement read.

Nigerians in affected areas have been urged to adhere strictly to local security guidelines and immediately contact the nearest Nigerian embassy or mission for registration and further instructions.

The Federal Government also expressed gratitude to diplomatic staff in both countries for their ongoing support to Nigerian communities amid the conflict.

“The Ministry commends the efforts put in place by our Missions in Tel Aviv, Israel and Tehran, Iran, for their dedication and commitment to reaching out to the Nigerian community in these difficult times,” it added.

The government said it is working closely with international partners and local authorities to ensure a secure and timely evacuation process.

In response to the growing crisis, Nigeria renewed its call for a ceasefire and urged all parties to embrace diplomatic dialogue, while stressing the importance of respecting international humanitarian law and prioritizing the protection of civilians.

“The Government of Nigeria reiterates its call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to embrace dialogue, respect international humanitarian law, and prioritise the protection of civilians.”

The Ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and global stability, and promised that updates on the evacuation process would be provided through official channels.

The evacuation plan follows a significant escalation last Friday, when Israel launched a large-scale air assault on about 100 strategic targets across Iran, including military and nuclear sites.

Among the casualties were Iran’s armed forces chief of staff, General Mohammad Bagheri, and top IRGC commander Hossein Salami. In response, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared the attack a “declaration of war” and warned of a “bitter and painful” retaliation.

Iran’s military has since threatened that its response would have “no limits,” prompting widespread concern over the possibility of a broader regional conflict.
