New Alaafin of Oyo Emerges

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the New Alaafin of Oyo.
This decision follows thorough consultations and divinations by the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers of Oyo, who recommended Prince Owoade for the esteemed position.
The announcement was made on Friday Jan 10, by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who emphasized that this development concludes the socio-legal disputes that have persisted since the passing of Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ademola Ojo, expressed optimism that Prince Owoade’s reign will usher in peace, prosperity, and unity to the historic Oyo Kingdom.
The selection process for the New Alaafin of Oyo has been marked by delays and controversies. Following Oba Adeyemi’s death, the Oyo Mesi selected a candidate and forwarded the name to the state government.
However, legal disputes and petitions challenging the selection process led to significant delays. In July 2024, reports indicated that the succession delay had fueled counter-accusations among stakeholders.
Despite these challenges, the state government has now endorsed Prince Owoade’s appointment, calling on all citizens to support the new monarch. The government also urged the public to disregard any actions that might disrupt the peace and stability of the kingdom.
Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade’s ascension to the throne marks a new chapter in the history of Oyo, and his leadership is anticipated to continue the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Alaafin institution.
