Meta agrees to pay Donald Trump $25m to settle lawsuit

Meta and Donald Trump have reached a settlement in which Meta will pay $25 million. Trump filed the lawsuit in 2021 after the social media network suspended his accounts following the attack on the US Capitol on January 6.

A Meta representative has confirmed the settlement, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the majority of the settlement $22 million will be used to establish a fund to finance Trump’s presidential library.

The rest will go to other plaintiffs named in the complaint and cover legal costs. A request for comment was not immediately answered by the White House.

The lawsuit against Twitter was dismissed by a federal judge. Although it was closed in 2023, the Google lawsuit may be revived.

The business made the decision because “we believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great,” according to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook.

The company gave Trump the maximum penalty under those rules, suspending his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely.
