LASG to Begin Removal of Illegal Structures on Lagos Island Today

The Lagos State Government,LASG has commenced the removal of illegal stalls and shanties under Apongbon Bridge and along theSavage/Elegbata/Bombata drainage setback on Lagos Island. This follows a 48-hour quit notice issued last week.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this while speaking to journalists at Ebute-Ero. He stated that the exercise aims to ensure free flow of drainage and protect public infrastructures.

Wahab explained that all extensions obstructing drainage channels will be demolished. However, buildings not constructed on drainage alignments will remain unaffected during the enforcement activities.

He expressed concerns over the disregard for laws by some stall owners and traders, buttressing that cleared areas will not be accessible for future use as strict measures will ensure compliance.

The commissioner also warned contractors against dumping materials on constructed drains, which disrupt stormwater flow.
