Lagos launches 80m clean cook stoves to cut emissions

As part of a decisive plan to reduce carbon emissions in Lagos and improve the state’s capacity to earn a Carbon – Credit portfolio to fund infrastructural projects, a three-day “80 million Clean Cook Stoves Project Implementation Retreat has commenced in the state.
The project, which is a collaboration between the Lagos state government through the Office of Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Green Plinth Africa, Carbon AI, Carbonivity, and Numerix Development Limited, is expected to distribute free Eighty Million Clean Cooking Stoves to rural women across the country.
The three-day technical session is expected to discuss and come up with recommendations on ways to eradicate the healthy and environmental hazards associated with the use of firewood to cook and the need to advise the federal government on ways to improve the nation’s capacity to harness Carbon-credit.
In his opening address, the Chairman of the occasion and Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu, who reiterated his administration’s commitment to securing a cleaner and carbon emission-free environment, announced that the state government would commence the distribution of Clean Cook stoves in the Makoko area from June this year.
Represented by the state’s head of service. Mr. Bode Agoro , Governor Sanwo-olu, said if properly harnessed, the Green Investment in the state has the potential of creating three point five million green jobs.
Governor Sanwo-olu also announced that plans are underway to establish a factory to produce Clean Cooking stoves in Lagos.
Contributing, the Niger State Governor and Special Guest to the occasion, Mr. Mohammed Bago, who was represented by the Director General, Niger State Green Economy Agency, Dr. Abila Galadima, while congratulating the Lagos state government for being the first state in the federation to witness the launch of the initiative, reiterated that matters directly associated with climate change will continue to be a top priority to the Niger State government.
Governor Bago said his administration has continued to initiate policies and implement programmes to boost the green economy.
On his part, the Managing Director of Green Plinth Africa, Dr. Victor Fodeke, explained that twenty states of the federation have keyed into the “80 million Clean Cooking Stoves Project” to reduce carbon emissions and encourage tree planting to address the menace of deforestation.
Dr. Fodeke said that the three-day technical retreat is expected to make recommendations on how to reduce carbon emissions and improve the capacity of Nigeria to earn foreign exchange from carbon credit.
The event was well attended by climate change advocates and environmentalists.
