Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political realignment in the state.

The announcement was made on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the Akwa Ibom Government House in Uyo, where several APC governors and party leaders gathered in a show of support.

Speaking during the event, Governor Eno said:
“It is time to move. After wide consultations and deep reflection, I have decided to align Akwa Ibom with the federal government. This move is in the best interest of our people and will ensure we are not left behind in national development plans.”

He emphasized that his decision was driven by a desire to foster stronger cooperation with the central government and to attract more opportunities and projects to the state.

The defection has stirred mixed reactions across the state. While many APC supporters have welcomed Eno’s move, some PDP stakeholders, including former National Legal Adviser Emmanuel Enoidem, have voiced strong opposition. Enoidem insisted the PDP will remain active and competitive in Akwa Ibom politics.

Security around the Government House was visibly heightened during the announcement. A larger ceremony had reportedly been planned but was scaled down due to the ongoing Sallah holiday.

Governor Eno’s move is expected to significantly reshape the political dynamics of Akwa Ibom ahead of future elections.
