Employers Cannot Authorize Corps Members’ Travel, Says Akowonlehin
Assistant Director, Corps Discipline and Reward, NYSC Lagos, Mrs. Victoria Akowonlehin, has clarified that employers cannot authorize corps members’ travel during their service year.
According to her, “Only the NYSC has the authority to approve travel requests, although employers can recommend them”.
Speaking at the ongoing 2024 Batch “B” Stream I Orientation Course, Akowonlehin emphasized that the Corps Discipline and Reward branch punishes misdemeanors and rewards meritorious service.
“Offences punishable by the NYSC include rudeness, insubordination, and refusal to accept posting, among others. Repeat offences can lead to extension or repeat of service”.
Absence from service for 90 consecutive days also attracts a repeat of service, with the corps member required to refund all allowances received. Unavailability for two months leads to an extension of service equal to twice the number of months missed.
On the other hand, corps members who render meaningful service can receive various rewards, including State Coordinator’s letters of commendation, Local Government merit awards, State Honours Awards, and presidential Honours awards.
