AGF confirms legality of IGP Egbetokun’s extended tenure

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, clarified on Thursday that the continuous tenure of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is legal and in accordance with the law.
In a statement, Fagbemi said Egbetokun’s appointment, which took effect on October 31, 2023, remains valid for a period of four years.
The statement followed concerns regarding Egbetokun’s upcoming retirement age, as he was set to turn 60 on September 4, 2024.
Fagbemi explained that the Police Act was amended to allow the IGP to complete his full four-year term, regardless of age limits.
“However, before his retirement age, the Police Act was amended to allow the occupant of the office to remain and complete the original four-year term granted under Section 7(6) of the Act, notwithstanding the fact that he has attained the age of 60 years.”
Consequently, Egbetokun’s tenure will extend until October 31, 2027.
“This has, therefore, statutorily extended the tenure of office of Egbetokun to and including the 31st day of October 2027, in order to complete the four-year tenure granted to him.” The statement added.
This clarification was issued for public understanding and to reaffirm the law’s provisions, the AGF added.
