Vicar urges government to prioritise citizens’ welfare

The Vicar of All Saints Anglican Church, Wuse, Abuja, Venerable Ernest Onuoha, has called on the Nigerian government to place the welfare of its citizens at the heart of national policy formulation and implementation.
Addressing newsmen after leading the church’s Easter Sunday service, Venerable Onuoha emphasised the importance of supporting the agricultural sector, which he described as critical to achieving food security and establishing Nigeria as a global player in food exportation.
He noted that this year’s Easter celebration comes at a time of widespread insecurity and economic hardship.
However, he reminded the congregation that the resurrection of Jesus Christ stands as a powerful symbol of hope, encouraging Nigerians to believe in a brighter future despite current challenges.
“The resurrection is not just a biblical event; it’s a message to us all that there is hope, that better days are possible. As a nation, we must hold onto this hope,” he said.
Call to religious leaders
Onuoha also called on fellow religious leaders across the country to use their platforms to spread messages of hope, resilience, and unity, particularly in times when many citizens are grappling with despair.
Worshippers at the Easter service echoed the vicar’s message. Mrs Franka Umunna expressed renewed faith and optimism, saying, “Today we are celebrating Christ risen.
As Christians, we were taught that everything about us was also risen with Christ—our peace, our health, our lives. There is no more downcast in my life; I am moving forward, not backward.”
Another congregant, Mr Philip Amadi, underscored the need to promote love and compassion across the country. He described the lack of these values as one of the root causes of insecurity and insurgency in Nigeria.
“We are not mourning because He died; we are rejoicing because He resurrected. His resurrection brought victory into our lives. The most important lesson today is forgiveness—just as Christ forgave on the cross, we too must learn to forgive”, he said.
Mr Uche Udeke reflected on the spiritual significance of the day, highlighting the message of forgiveness.
