Telegram launches new verification feature to combat scams
Telegram has announced a series of updates, including a new verification feature aimed at combating scams on its platform.
The new features include third-party account verification, enhanced search filters, and the ability to convert gifts into NFTs (non-fungible tokens).
In a recent blog post, Telegram stated that the verification feature is designed to curb misinformation while increasing security and trust within the community.
Previously limited to public figures and organisations, the verification feature will now be extended to trusted third-party authorities, such as regulatory bodies and educational institutions.
Additionally, verified accounts will display a unique logo instead of the traditional blue checkmark, making them easier to identify.
“This decentralised platform for additional verification will help prevent scams and reduce misinformation—with a unique proactive solution that sets a new safety standard for social platforms,” the blog post reads.
Telegram said users or organisations must complete an application process to qualify for verification.
Conversion of gifts to NFTs
The platform’s bot API also allows verified entities to manage the verification status of their affiliated accounts, with their logos prominently displayed on profiles.
Beyond verification, Telegram has introduced a feature allowing users to convert gifts into NFTs, which can be traded on various platforms.
Telegram will charge an undisclosed fee to cover blockchain transaction costs when NFTs are traded.
Other updates include a new emoji reaction feature for service messages, such as when someone joins a group, and improved search filters for private chats, group chats, and channels.
Turbulent period
This rollout follows a turbulent period for the company. In September 2024, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov faced legal challenges, including charges in France over allegations that the platform enabled illegal activities.
In response, Telegram implemented significant changes, such as revising its privacy policies, disabling features susceptible to misuse, and adopting more proactive moderation practices to enhance user safety.
