Salmwang Urges Corps Members to Uphold Discipline, Embrace Service Opportunities

The State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mrs. Christiana Salmwang, has called on newly deployed corps members to strictly adhere to camp rules and take full advantage of the opportunities the scheme offers.

Addressing 2025 Batch A Stream II prospective corps members during an official camp briefing, Salmwang stated the importance of discipline, cooperation, and active participation as critical to a successful service year.

She emphasized the need for corps members to be security-conscious and community-oriented, urging them to look beyond personal gain and embrace the larger goal of national development.

She noted this is a unique opportunity for you to contribute meaningfully to society, charging them to be observant, identify problems within your host communities, and think of how you can offer solutions.

In a strong cautionary note, the coordinator warned against involvement in social vices, including cultism, drug abuse, and violence, describing such behavior as not only detrimental to personal development but also contrary to the values of the NYSC.

Salmwang also drew attention to the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, a core part of the NYSC curriculum designed to boost corps members’ employability. The programme, she said, offers training in 11 vocational areas, giving participants a head start in building viable careers beyond their service year.

She assured corps members of the scheme’s commitment to their welfare, noting that accommodation, feeding, medical care, and monthly stipends are fully covered by the NYSC at no cost to them.

The State Coordinator also urged corps members to utilize official communication channels for complaints or concerns. She advised against airing grievances on social media, warning that misinformation could cause unnecessary panic and damage the public image of the scheme. “Report issues through your platoon officers or the appropriate NYSC authorities. Let’s handle challenges responsibly,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony for the prospective corps members is slated for tomorrow. Salmwang appealed to all participants to approach the event with the seriousness it deserves, describing the Oath of Allegiance as a symbolic and essential rite of passage in the national service journey.
