Reps Consider Bill Proposing 7-Year Jail Term or ₦5m Fine for Workplace Bribery

The House of Representatives is currently considering a bill that seeks to impose tough penalties on individuals involved in bribery within the workplace.
The proposed legislation recommends a jail term of up to seven years or a fine of ₦5 million for anyone found guilty of giving or receiving bribes in a professional setting.
This move is part of ongoing efforts by the National Assembly to strengthen anti-corruption laws and promote transparency across both public and private sectors.
While details of the bill are still under review, it aligns with recent legislative actions targeting unethical conduct. These include stiffer penalties for public officers who misuse funds, proposed jail terms for those using public money for unauthorized foreign medical trips, and sanctions against employers who fail to pay staff salaries.
If passed into law, the bill would further expand Nigeria’s legal framework for fighting corruption, reinforcing accountability in workplace conduct.
