Putin Condemns U.S. Strikes on Iran, Calls It ‘Unjustified Aggression’

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denounced the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran, calling them “unjustified aggression” and voicing strong support for the Iranian people amid rising regional tensions.

Putin made the remarks during a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, in Moscow on Monday—just two days after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered strikes on three of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

“The unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis and no justification,” Putin said in a televised statement. “We are working to support the Iranian people. I’m very glad you’re in Moscow today so we can discuss these urgent matters and explore ways out of the current crisis.”

Araqchi, in response, defended Iran’s retaliatory stance, insisting it was an act of self-defence. He thanked Moscow for standing with Tehran.

“Russia is today on the right side of history and international law,” Araqchi said, also relaying greetings from Iran’s Supreme Leader and President.

Though Putin affirmed Russia’s political backing, the nature of Moscow’s tangible support remains uncertain. A strategic partnership deal signed in January between the two nations does not include a mutual defense clause.

The Kremlin had previously warned that any military action in Iran could destabilize the region and lead to grave consequences.

When asked about potential Russian assistance, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “It all depends on what Iran needs,” adding that Moscow’s ongoing mediation efforts already constitute a form of support.

Peskov condemned the U.S. strikes, warning that the situation has entered a dangerous new phase.

“We are witnessing an expansion of the conflict’s participants—indeed, it has already happened. This marks a new spiral of escalation, and we deeply condemn it,” he said.

He also raised concerns over possible radiation risks following the U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear sites.

Peskov further disclosed that President Trump had not provided Putin with any detailed advance notice of the strikes, despite recent discussions between the two leaders.

“There was no detailed information,” Peskov said. “Iran was discussed during their latest conversations, and Russia presented several proposals, but there was no specific briefing on this operation.”
