Ohanaeze Ndigbo Declares Intent to Join National Politics, Targets 2027 Elections

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has announced its intention to take an active role in Nigeria’s political affairs, beginning with the 2027 general elections.
This declaration followed the election of Chief Emeka Egwuonwu as the new President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Cross River State. The election, which took place in Ikom, central Cross River, saw Egwuonwu emerge to lead the state chapter of the group for the next four years.
In his acceptance speech, Egwuonwu described his victory as the dawn of a new era, stressing that the days of passive political involvement for Igbos, whether in Cross River or across Nigeria, were over.
“We will be fully and actively involved in politics, starting from the 2027 national elections,” he said. “Our engagement will ensure our people are not left out of the dividends of democracy and good governance.”
Egwuonwu pledged to mobilise the Igbo community to pursue collective interests and reposition the group for effective advocacy. He further promised to lead with integrity and determination, working closely with the Cross River State government to advance the welfare of Igbos within the state and beyond.
“It is not going to be business as usual,” he declared. “We are determined to make a difference and elevate the status of our people, both at home and in the diaspora.”
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, through his Special Adviser on Non-Indigene Affairs, Mazi Okey Maduekwe, commended the peaceful conduct of the election and congratulated Egwuonwu on his emergence.
Otu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Igbo community, noting their contributions to the state’s development.
“You can see that the Igbos are happy here in Cross River, and just as I have supported them, they have also been very supportive of my government,” the governor noted.
