Oba Elegushi Urges Corps Members to Embrace Self-Development and Patriotism

His Royal Majesty, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III, the Oba of Ikate-Elegushi, has called on members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to prioritize self-development, patriotism, and positive nation-building.
The monarch made this passionate appeal during a courtesy visit to his palace by a delegation from NYSC Lagos State, led by the State Coordinator, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang.
Addressing the delegation, Oba Elegushi emphasized the need for corps members to look beyond the pursuit of white-collar jobs and instead channel their energy into acquiring practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge that will not only benefit them personally but also contribute to national development.
“Youths must begin to take responsibility for their future. Waiting endlessly for government jobs is no longer sustainable. Develop yourselves, acquire skills, and become problem solvers,” the monarch advised.
He further urged corps members to be ambassadors of hope and positivity for Nigeria, especially on social media platforms. According to him, the growing trend of projecting negativity about the country online contributes to national disunity and disillusionment among young people.
“Speak well of Nigeria, promote unity, and let the world see the best of our nation through your conduct and contributions,” Oba Elegushi said.
The royal father also raised concern over the rising menace of drug abuse among youths and stressed the critical role of families, especially parents, in steering their children away from destructive habits. He commended the NYSC for participating in sensitization programs aimed at combating drug abuse and pledged continued support for youth-centered initiatives.
Earlier, Mrs. Salmwang expressed appreciation to the Oba for his consistent support for corps members in Eti-Osa and other parts of Lagos. She acknowledged his involvement in recent youth empowerment programs and noted that his efforts align with the NYSC’s mission to build responsible, civic-minded citizens.
She also invited the Oba to attend the upcoming Cultural Day celebration scheduled for the next orientation course, to which the monarch responded positively.
