NANS Faults Super Eagles Coach Appointment
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for appointing Eric Sékou Chelle as the Super Eagles new head coach.
The appointment announcement, made on January 7, 2025, has faced criticism over Chelle’s alleged lack of qualifications and achievements. It was alleged that his track record was nothing extraordinary and not enough for a Super Eagles coach.
In a statement by Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, Clerk of NANS Senate, the student body labeled the decision an “aberration.” They explained that Chelle’s tenure as Mali’s coach since 2022 showed no significant accomplishments as he failed to qualify for the World Cup or secure an African Cup of Nations title.
NANS expressed their discontentment, claims Nigeria boasts better coaching talents locally. They urged the NFF to reconsider its choice, prioritizing seasoned Nigerian coaches or experienced European candidates to lead the national team.
The Coach who was a laughing stock in the last African Cups of Nations in Cote d’Ivore was described an half-baked one and a setback for Nigerian football. NANS concluded by challenging the NFF to adopt merit-based appointment only.
