IGP’s Historic Initiative: Transforming Police Pension for a Secure Future

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has launched an unprecedented initiative aimed at overhauling the pension system for retired police personnel, marking a significant shift in ensuring a dignified post-service life for officers.
“In an era-defining move, we are dedicated to revolutionizing the welfare and post-seen service security of our esteemed police force, both active and retired,” stated the Inspector-General, emphasizing a steadfast commitment to enhancing the welfare of officers.
Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Wednesday, highlighted that addressing the welfare concerns of Police Officers has been a paramount focus since the IGP assumed office. Adejobi reinforced the IGP’s commitment, affirming, “We’re resolutely dedicated to exploring pathways that guarantee a robust and secure pension system for our retiring officers.”
The pivotal meeting held at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, in 2023, convened retired and serving Police Officers alongside pension experts to scrutinize existing Police Pensions and explore enhancements. After comprehensive evaluation, the IGP advocated for a cautious approach, identifying potential challenges in the proposed pension scheme.
Undeterred by these complexities, the Inspector-General has championed the cause, forming a dedicated team entrusted with formulating a pioneering pension system. The aim is to equip every retiring police officer for a secure and thriving post-service life, mitigating the prevalent hardships faced post-retirement.
“The welfare of our officers, even post-retirement, remains a top priority. We’re committed to establishing a pension scheme that assures financial security, reinforcing the core values of dedication and service to the nation,” reaffirmed the Inspector-General.
Reiterating the call for unity and cooperation, the IGP urged serving officers and retirees to align with the Force’s leadership, aiming to forge a comprehensive Police Pension Scheme uplifting the entire Police family in Nigeria.
“This bold move signifies an era of profound transformation in the welfare and security of those who have devoted their lives to serving our nation,” he added.
