Governor Bago Cancels Eid-el-Kabir Celebrations in Niger State to Honor Victims of Mokwa Flood

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has announced the cancellation of all official Eid-el-Kabir celebrations across the state in a show of solidarity with victims of the devastating flood that struck Mokwa Local Government Area on May 29, 2025.
The flood, considered one of the worst in the state’s history, claimed the lives of over 200 people, affected more than 500 households, and displaced over 3,000 residents. The disaster also caused widespread infrastructural damage, submerging and destroying three major bridges and significantly hindering rescue efforts and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, Governor Bago directed that only low-key Sallah observances be held across all emirates. Traditional Eid festivities such as the Durbar, Hawan Bariki, and other public gatherings have been suspended.
“This decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic flood in Mokwa,” the statement read. “It is also intended to allow a period of mourning, prayer, and sober reflection throughout the state.”
Governor Bago extended his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones and to communities whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed. He called on residents to use the Eid season to pray for the departed and to extend compassion and charity to those in need.
The Durbar, a vibrant cultural event featuring traditional rulers and horsemen in procession, is typically a highlight of the Sallah celebrations. Its cancellation this year highlights the seriousness of the tragedy and the government’s decision to prioritize mourning and humanitarian relief over public festivities.
Governor Bago reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting affected communities, promising sustained relief efforts and a long-term strategy to prevent future disasters of such magnitude.
