France To Ban Smoking In Outdoor Spaces Frequented By Children From July 1

France will ban smoking in all outdoor areas where children are likely to be present, Health and Family Minister Catherine Vautrin announced.
Starting July 1, the ban will apply to beaches, parks, public gardens, spaces outside schools, bus stops, and sports venues.
“Tobacco must disappear where there are children,” Vautrin said in an interview with Ouest-France. She added, “The freedom to smoke must end where the freedom of children to breathe fresh air begins.”
However, outdoor seating areas of cafes and bars — known as terrasses — will not be affected by the ban.
Violators will face a €135 fine, Vautrin said, noting that regular police will enforce the measure. She also expressed confidence in public cooperation, saying she believes strongly in “self-regulation.”
