FG to extend crackdown on degrees accreditation

The Federal Government says it will extend the suspension of degrees accreditation to more countries, including Kenya and Uganda.
This comes days after the Ministry of Education suspended the accreditation of degrees from Benin and Togo.
Education Minister Tahir Mamman stated this during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday.
“We are going to extend the dragnet to countries like Uganda, Kenya, even Niger here where such institutions have been set up,” he added.
The move followed a report detailing how a degree was acquired from a university in Benin Republic within two months by an undercover reporter Umar Audu.
“I have no sympathy for people patronising the institutions. Instead, they are part of the criminal chain that should be arrested”, he stated.
The minster said the measure is crucial to safeguarding Nigeria’s employers and preserving the integrity of the country’s qualifications.
In the meantime, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had appealed to the Federal Government to reconsider the suspension of accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo.
The students’ body maintained that the government need to have a rethink on the impact the decision would have on legitimate students who have pursued their education in the affected countries.
