FCTA Shuts Down International Conference Centre for Renovation
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken decisive action by closing the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja for extensive renovations.
The closure, ordered by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, was announced on Monday following an inspection of the ICC facilities.
Mr Wike stressed the urgent need for rehabilitation to bring the Centre up to international standards.
He stated that all events scheduled at the Centre have been cancelled to expedite the renovation process.
During the inspection, Mr Wike referred to President Bola Tinubu’s remarks on the poor condition of the ICC facilities during the inauguration of the ECOWAS Parliament.
He expressed confidence that the renovations would be completed within the next seven to eight months, delivering a facility that meets international expectations.
“We have assessed the situation, and it’s unacceptable. This cannot continue as an international conference centre. We are determined to rectify this.”
“We have engaged the original contractor, Julius Berger, to resume the renovation work promptly,” he said.
Julius Berger Plc, the original builder of the complex, has been tasked with rehabilitating the ICC.
Plans are in place for the ICC to be managed by the Abuja Investment Company upon completion of the renovation, signalling a shift towards improved oversight and management practices.
Warning
While refraining from launching an investigation into the previous facility manager’s performance, Mr Wike issued a warning to the new Group Managing Director of the Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL), Maureen Tamuno, urging her to meet the project’s requirements.
He also expressed confidence in her ability to manage the project effectively.
“I’m not here to probe anybody; I don’t want to begin to find excuses why the jobs are not doing well. The Group Managing Director of Abuja Investment Company knows what to do; mine is to give the country a befitting International Conference Centre.”
“And if she does not do it well, we have no choice but to take decisive action, but I believe she can run it well,” he added.
Accompanying Mr Wike on the inspection tour were key officials including the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Shehu Ahmed, the Managing Director of Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL), Maureen Tamuno, and the Regional Manager of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Oliver Berger, among others.
