The House Committee on Reformatory Institutions has expressed concern over the prolonged detention of some inmates in correctional centres across Abia State.

The committee’s chairman, Chief Chinedu Ogah, raised the issue during a visit to Governor Alex Otti at his Nvosi country home in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area. He noted that many inmates had spent years in detention without court appearances or the ability to meet bail conditions.

Chief Ogah urged Governor Otti to establish a committee to engage inmates under non-custodial sentences, ensuring a more effective rehabilitation and reintegration process.

He commended the governor for his infrastructural initiatives aimed at improving correctional facilities in the state, particularly in enhancing security, supporting artisanship, and providing essential amenities such as water supply and solar street lights in the centres.

Chief Ogah noted that Abia is the only state in the Southeast with a 3,000-capacity correctional centre located in Uzuakoli. He appealed for urgent intervention to address the poor condition of the road leading to the facility.

In response, Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to rehabilitating and improving the Aba and Umuahia correctional centres. He emphasized the need for humane treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration of detainees.

The governor expressed commitment to decongesting correctional centres, ensuring that minor offenders receive fair opportunities for reintegration into society.

Governor Otti also reaffirmed his resolve to rebuild Abia, drawing inspiration from the legacies of visionary leaders.

He commended the House Committee members for their dedication to their oversight functions despite limited resources.
