Air India Flight With Over 200 Passengers Crashes Shortly After Takeoff in Ahmedabad

An Air India flight bound for London has crashed shortly after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, western India.

Images circulating from the crash site show thick plumes of black smoke rising into the sky, with emergency services rushing to the scene. Details on the number of passengers on board or possible casualties remain unclear at this time.

Air India confirmed the incident in a brief statement, noting: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad–London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. We are currently gathering further information and will provide updates as soon as possible.”

Gatwick Airport also released a statement, confirming that Flight AI171 had crashed on departure. The flight had been scheduled to arrive in the UK at 6:25 p.m. local time (1:25 p.m. ET).

Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the cause of the crash.
