Dutch Footballer Quincy Promes Arrested in Dubai Following Extradition Request

Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has been arrested at his home in Dubai following an extradition request from the Netherlands, according to a report by De Telegraaf.
Promes, 33, was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison in February 2024 for his involvement in smuggling over a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands via the port of Antwerp.
The former Ajax player had also previously been convicted of stabbing his nephew during a family gathering in 2020. Shortly after that incident, Promes transferred from Ajax to Spartak Moscow in a deal worth €8.5 million. Both convictions are currently under appeal.
Earlier this week, Promes told an interviewer he was willing to travel to the Netherlands to attend his appeal hearings—as long as he could remain free. He submitted a formal request to that effect, but the Amsterdam court of appeal rejected it.
The Dutch public prosecution service declined to comment on Promes’ arrest but previously said the extradition process was “at an advanced stage” and that “progress is being made.”
Promes, who earned 50 caps for the Netherlands national team, played last season for Dubai United FC but is currently a free agent, De Telegraaf added.
His lawyer confirmed the arrest but declined to give further comment.
