Tinubu Warns Police Against Intimidation, Urges Accountability and Service to Citizens

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold the principles of professionalism, accountability, and service to the people, warning against any form of abuse or intimidation of citizens.
Speaking through Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the 2nd Annual Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Awards and Commendation Ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasized the importance of responsible policing.
“The power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service,” the President said, urging officers to uphold the rule of law, safeguard citizens’ rights, and reject corruption.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the Force through modern equipment, advanced technology, and continuous training. “Modern policing demands modern tools, intelligence-led strategies, and strong community partnerships,” he stated.
Tinubu also congratulated the award recipients, calling them symbols of duty and dedication. “You have made the nation proud. Let this honour push you to even greater professionalism and integrity,” he said.
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, acknowledged emerging security challenges such as terrorism, cybercrime, and kidnapping, calling for smarter and more responsive policing strategies. He stressed the need for innovation and community trust as the cornerstone of effective law enforcement.
“We are your sentinels—not perfect, but resolute. Your safety is our mission. Your trust is our shield,” Egbetokun said.
He noted that the awards represent a shift toward excellence and merit, praising recipients for their courage, leadership, and ethical standards. He also encouraged other officers to strive for excellence, reminding them that “excellence is not a finish line; it is a daily standard.”
The event was attended by key dignitaries including the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar; and several former Inspectors-General of Police.
