“VeryDarkMan to be released today” – Insider

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to release popular social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, on Tuesday, following days of public outcry over his arrest.

A senior EFCC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development to Vanguard on Monday, stating that while Otse remains in custody, formal charges have not yet been filed against him.

VeryDarkMan was arrested on Friday, May 2, over multiple petitions alleging cyberstalking and related offenses.

His detention has sparked a wave of backlash from many Nigerians, who view his arrest as an attack on free speech and a targeted attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Public outrage continued to mount over the weekend, culminating in a protest on Monday in Abuja.

Demonstrators gathered in Wuse, holding placards with messages such as “Free VDM!” and “End Selective Justice!” in a strong demand for his release.

Sources close to the EFCC revealed that several charges are currently being drafted and are expected to be presented in court by Thursday.

VeryDarkMan is widely known for his bold commentaries on politics, corruption, and societal issues, frequently calling out government officials and institutions.

His arrest has since drawn criticism from various quarters, including opposition figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who described it as a ‘blatant abuse of power’

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not released an official statement regarding the status of VeryDarkMan’s case.
