Tinubu’s regime enjoys Peter Obi’s kind of spineless opposition – Sowore

Publisher and activist Omoyele Sowore has once again criticised Peter Obi and the Labour Party, describing the former presidential candidate as a spineless opposition and the party as an internally damaged platform.
Sowore made the remarks during an interview on Channels TV’s Inside Sources with Maupe Ogun-Yusuf, where he was asked to assess the current state of Nigeria’s political opposition.
“I don’t want to talk about Peter Obi anymore. Contrary to the belief that Peter Obi was opposed to the system or capable of opposing the system, he is incapable of doing it,” Sowore stated.
He reiterated his previous analogy of the Labour Party being a temporary political vehicle, likening it to a short-term rental property.
“I stated in 2022 and 2023 that the Labour Party was a short-term rental—an Airbnb. You move in, you check out when your time expires. When they are done with Obi, they will move the rental to another place,” he said.
According to Sowore, Obi only gained national momentum during the 2023 election cycle due to growing concerns over the Muslim-Muslim ticket presented by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Christians were against Islamizing Nigeria, and Peter Obi was the best available candidate,” he noted.
However, Sowore argued that Obi has consistently failed to act like a true opposition leader, pointing out that even figures like ex-president Buhari and Bola Tinubu led public protests during their time in opposition.
“He didn’t even organise his supporters to fight for his own election victory. He didn’t fight when fuel prices increased. He has never done anything that the opposition does. Even if the 2012 protesters are gone, what about your own six million voters? Put 60,000 people on the streets of Abuja and see how the government reacts.” Sowore said.
Sowore accused Obi and his supporters of undermining any real push for structural change in Nigeria, claiming they merely want to replace the current elite without challenging the system.
“You and your voters are the ones pouring cold water on any protest because you don’t want the country to change. You just want Tinubu’s group replaced by you,” he added.
He also pointed to recent defections by Labour Party lawmakers to the APC as evidence of what he called the party’s lack of ideological depth or commitment to change.
“They are not real. The Tinubu regime enjoys their type of opposition because they pose no threat. You say you are an opposition leader, but you’re just attending burials,” he concluded.
