Afolasade Samagbeyi: Certainly, Asiwaju Media. Despite the progress we’ve seen, there are still persistent hurdles such as gender stereotypes, unequal pay, and gender-based violence that continue to impede women’s advancement to leadership roles.

Asiwaju Media: How would you describe the representation of women in Nigerian media today?

Afolasade Samagbeyi: We’ve certainly seen some improvement in the representation of women across various media roles. However, prevailing gender stereotypes and societal perceptions still limit women’s access to leadership positions. There’s a clear need for concerted efforts to dismantle these barriers and foster a more inclusive environment within the industry.

Asiwaju Media: Drawing from your personal experiences, can you discuss instances of gender-based discrimination and bias that you’ve encountered in the media workplace?

Afolasade Samagbeyi: Certainly. I’ve personally experienced instances of gender-based discrimination and bias in the media workplace. These biases not only restrict opportunities for career growth but also perpetuate gender inequality. Additionally, the prevalence of unequal pay has significant implications for women’s financial well-being and overall job satisfaction.

Afolasade Samagbeyi: Despite the challenges we face, there are promising initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality within the media sector. We’re seeing efforts to implement pay equity measures, foster inclusive workplace cultures, and provide support systems for women experiencing harassment or abuse. These initiatives are crucial steps towards creating a more equitable and supportive environment for women in the industry.
