Plateau Assembly Elects Nanloong Daniel as Speaker After Dewan’s Resignation

The Plateau State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Nanloong Daniel as its new Speaker following the resignation of Hon. Gabriel Dewan.

Daniel, who represents Mikang State Constituency and previously served as Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously chosen by lawmakers during an emergency session held on Wednesday at the temporary Assembly Complex in the Old Government House, Jos.

The session, presided over by Deputy Speaker Hon. Gwotta Ajang, came shortly after a closed-door meeting involving Governor Caleb Mutfwang, former Speaker Dewan, and other legislators. The meeting was part of broader efforts to ease political tensions in the state.

Dewan, the sole lawmaker from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 24-member House, resigned to support efforts aimed at restoring political stability.

His exit cleared the path for Daniel’s unopposed emergence as a consensus candidate.

The Assembly is expected to reconvene in the coming days to tackle pending legislative and governance issues.
