Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme – 2025 Academic Session

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), an esteemed agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria, is dedicated to enhancing local human capacity and fostering research and technological advancement within the oil and gas sector.

As part of its commitment to developing a skilled workforce for the petroleum industry, the PTDF is pleased to announce the commencement of its Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme for the 2025 academic year. The scheme invites applications from qualified Nigerian candidates seeking to pursue Master’s and Doctoral degrees in specialized fields at select institutions abroad.

Eligibility Requirements

For PhD Applicants

Prospective PhD candidates must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Must have successfully completed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer usage.
  • Possess a minimum of five (5) credits in O’Level examinations, including English Language and Mathematics.
  • Hold at least a Second-Class Lower Division (2.2) in their undergraduate degree and a commendable postgraduate degree in a relevant field.
  • Submit a comprehensive research proposal (maximum of five pages) that aligns with current challenges in the oil and gas sector. The proposal must clearly outline the research topic, an introduction, research objectives, methodology, and data collection approach.
  • Must have a National Identity Number (NIN) that has been fully verified through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC); verification fees apply.

For MSc Applicants

Candidates applying for the Master’s degree program must:

  • Possess a minimum of Second-Class Upper Division (2.1) in their first degree. However, applicants with a Second-Class Lower Division (2.2) and relevant industry experience may also be considered.
  • Have completed the NYSC program.
  • Be proficient in computer usage.
  • Have five (5) credits in O’Level results, including English Language and Mathematics.
  • Provide a well-written statement of purpose (not exceeding 500 words) outlining their motivation for the chosen field of study, its relevance to the oil and gas industry, and its anticipated contribution to national development.
  • Ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified through NIMC (applicable verification charges apply).

Required Documentation

All applicants are required to upload the following documents during the application process:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Certificate or an official Statement of Result.
  • NYSC Discharge Certificate.
  • Original copies of O’Level results (WAEC/NECO/GCE/SSCE), along with the corresponding PINs for online result verification.
  • A recent passport-sized photograph.
  • Certificate of Local Government of Origin.
  • For PhD applicants only: Master’s Degree Certificate.
  • Evidence of membership in relevant professional organizations or bodies.
