Peter Obi Hails Ganduje’s Resignation as an Example for Ailing Leaders

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised the resignation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, describing it as an honourable decision that should inspire other public office holders grappling with health challenges.
Ganduje, who previously served as Governor of Kano State, stepped down on Friday, citing health concerns and the need to prioritise his personal well-being.
Reacting in a statement shared via his official X handle, Obi commended Ganduje’s choice to relinquish office on health grounds, emphasising that effective leadership demands both physical and mental capacity.
“Stepping aside for health reasons is an honourable choice. It shows awareness and respect for the responsibilities of leadership,” Obi said.
He further stressed that Nigeria can no longer bear the costs of medical tourism, prolonged sick leave, or absentee leadership resulting from age-related ailments, underscoring the importance of having fit and active leaders in office.
“By this singular act, Dr. Ganduje has set a moral benchmark. I hope others in similar situations will reflect and do the same,” Obi added.
