The Management Committee Member, in charge of Works and Information, Ngbo Central Development Centre and Special Assistant to the Deputy Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Martin, Chinonso Nwede who was Ex-Aide on Media to Senator Obinna Joseph Ogba has extolled President Bola Tinubu GCFR for giving assent to the Ebonyi State Federal University of Sports, Nkalegu which was initiated and sponsored by the immediate past Senator who represented Ebonyi Central Zone, Sen Obinna Joseph Ogba.
Nwede, who was a Media Aide to Sen Ogba expressed gratitude the Mr President for deeming it necessary to assent to the Bill after the Senate okayed it in 2021 and noted that the establishment of the University is significant and would help to shape the sporting sector in Nigeria and offer Nigerians the opportunity to harness their potentials which according to him would contribute greatly to the development of Nigeria.
He commended his ex-boss, Sen Ogba for initiating the bill while in the Senate and highlighted how naysayers lampooned the Bill to be audio because of political differences impulse. He said that many didn’t believe it would come to fruition and commended the Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency Rt Hon Bldr Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru FNIOB GGCEHF for his effort to ensure that the Bill was given assent, describing it as a show of leadership and concern for the development of the State.
The bill according to Nwede which sought the establishment of the Federal University of Sports, Nkelegu and National Sports Commission was on 7th December; 2021 at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly, as sponsored by Distinguished Senator Obinna Ogba passed by the Senate after a long protracted legislative process and since then waiting for President assent.
It could be recalled that the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at its sitting on Wednesday 19th, May 2021 passed for the 2nd time the Bill for an act to establish the Federal University of Sports Nkalagu, Ebonyi State. Equally, on Thursday 10th December 2020, the Bill for an act to establish the National Sports Commission passed a 2nd reading in the Senate. Both Bills were passed by the Senate and transmitted to the President for his assent.
Explaining the thrust of the Bill, Nwede said it sought to encourage the advancement of learning and to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex, or political conviction the opportunity of acquiring higher education in Sports.
The University according to him will help to develop and offer academic and professional programs leading to the award of degrees, post-graduate research, and Higher degrees with an emphasis on planning, adaptive, technical, maintenance, developmental, and productive skills in the engineering, scientific, and allied professional disciplines relating to sports resources to produce socially matured men and women with a capacity not only to understand, use and adapt existing technologies in the Sports but also to improve on them and develop new ones.
Senator Obinna Joseph Ogba represented Ebonyi Central Zone between 2015-2023 at the red chamber under the platform of PDP. He served as ECOWAS Senator, Chairman, of the Senate Committee on Youths and Sports, and was the Chairman, of NPL, and Founder, of Ogba Boys Football Club.
