2 min read

Assistant Director, of Corps Discipline and Reward and Head of Accommodation Committee on Camp, Mrs. Victoria Akowonlehin has said the NYSC through the Corps Discipline and Reward branch punishes misdemeanors of corps members and also rewards whoever serves the nation meritoriously during their service year.

She stated this while delivering the Corps Discipline and Reward lecture this morning to the 2023 Batch “C” Stream I corps members at the Orientation Camp in Iyana-Ipaja.

She noted that offenses that can have corps members punished are variant and can begin from the camp which can extend into service and repeat of service. She said rudeness and insubordination to officials on camp would earn them an extension of service.

Akowonlehinn explained that if an offense is committed within the camp, it is handled by the Camp Court. However, if an offense is committed outside the camp, it is referred to the Corps Disciplinary Committee. She also mentioned that corps members are not allowed to refuse a posting or attempt to induce rejection outside the camp, as such actions could lead to punishment.

During a discussion on traveling, she revealed that Corps members who fail to apply for and obtain approval before traveling will face punishment. She emphasized that Corps members are only allowed to travel when it is of immense importance. Regarding absences from service, she explained that being absent from service for a consecutive 90-day period will result in a repeat of service. If a Corps member repeats service, they must first pay back all allowances that have been paid to them.

She said the unavailability of corps members for two months attracts an extension of service, which is two times the number of months missed. On rewards, mentioning the various forms of rewards, she said the State Coordinator’s letter of commendation, Local Government merit award, State Honours Award, and presidential Honours award. She said all these awards are given to everyone who has contributed meaningful services to the nation during the service year.
