NYSC Leads Gender Sensitization Campaign in Lagos, Urges Stakeholder Engagement

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it has intensified its campaign against gender-based violence in the Southern States of Nigeria by conducting community sensitization and advocacy programs.
The NYSC Lagos State Chapter hosted a gender sensitization and advocacy programme on Friday, spearheaded by Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the Director-General of NYSC.
During the event, Brigadier General Ahmed emphasised the significance of the programme, which is being conducted under the banner of Corps Gender Vanguards.
He said this campaign aims to expose the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and gender inequality.
Brigadier General Ahmed called upon all stakeholders to challenge and combat these societal ills, particularly in rural communities.
He underscored the importance of recognizing that societal roles should not be solely determined by biological factors but should evolve and adapt to different situations.
Mrs Yetunde Baderinwa, the State Coordinator of NYSC Lagos, reiterated the objectives of the programme, emphasising the multifaceted nature of GBV, which encompasses physical, psychological, and human rights abuses.
She highlighted the imperative of ensuring that individuals are not deprived of opportunities based on their gender.
The event was attended by representatives from six secondary schools, including Gbaja Girls Junior & Senior Secondary School, Surulere Junior Secondary School, Adebola Baptist Senior Secondary School, and Clegg Senior Secondary School.
Other attendees included Alhaji Abdullahi Mustapha, Chief Imam of Surulere; Chiewe Usama, representing the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN); Shittu Ademola Onimole, Baale of Obele Odan; and Alhaja Toro Bayewu, representing the Chairman of Surulere Local Government Area.
The NYSC’s gender sensitization campaign underscores its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society, free from the scourge of gender-based violence and discrimination.
The active engagement of stakeholders further amplifies the importance of collective action in addressing these critical societal issues.
