At the 90th Anniversary of the school, Dr Wale Bolorunduro, Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, pleaded on government to put more effort in education to improve its quality.

Recall the Ilesa Grammar School was founded on Feb. 5, 1934.

Bolorunduro said that activities for the anniversary would inspire the old students toward bringing back the lost glory of the school.

“To understand the reason Ilesa Grammar School products shine so brightly in whatever space they occupy, nationally or globally, is to understand the cord that binds them.

“That cord is the Omoluabi or Omoluabi trait that the school ingrained in them ” added.

He appealed that if government should invest in the quality and funding of education, Nigerians would have no reason to travel abroad to study, noting that the situation was putting pressure on the Naira.

“Nigerians schooling abroad are putting pressure on the Naira.

He noted “It is easy to say prices of things had gone up and the reason is because the exchange rate had gone up.

Bolorunduro alleged “This is because people are looking for dollars to pay the school fees of their children abroad and this is affecting our economy.

He advised that “Government should therefore invest in the quality of education to discourage people from going abroad for study,” he said.

In his remarks, the National President of the association, Dr Obisesan Daramola, lamented that the government was not paying the needed attention to the quality education, which had increased the number of out-of-school children in the country.

“Government at all levels should prioritise education and that is human capital development.

“It is painful that due to lack of finance, many children are roaming the streets, unable to go to school and that should not be the case” he concluded.

“Government at all levels should therefore prioritise education, health and security, but in particular education, because it is everything, it brings development,” he said.

Members of the association include Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God; retired Justice Alfa Belgore, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, among others. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
