NAFDAC Confirms Nationwide Ban on Sachet Alcohol to Take Full Effect from December 31, 2025

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reaffirmed that the complete enforcement of the ban on the production and sale of sachet alcoholic beverages in Nigeria will commence on December 31, 2025.
This confirmation came from Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of NAFDAC’s FCT Directorate, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Monday.
Azikiwe clarified that the recent ministerial decision to temporarily lift the ban on sachet alcohol is only valid until the end of 2025.
“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by December 31, 2025. After this date, full enforcement of the ban will begin,” he said.
The temporary suspension of the ban was granted to give alcohol manufacturers and regulatory bodies ample time to prepare for a smoother and more structured implementation process.
Azikiwe urged the public to disregard misleading reports suggesting that the ban has been permanently revoked.
“The minister granted this temporary relief to allow for collaboration between manufacturers and regulators to ensure an effective transition,” he added.
NAFDAC’s Nationwide Awareness Campaign
NAFDAC has launched a nationwide public awareness campaign to educate citizens and industry stakeholders about the upcoming enforcement. Distributors have also been informed of the importance of responsible alcohol sales practices.
“We have sensitized distributors and emphasized that alcohol must not be sold to individuals under 18, as clearly indicated on product labels,” Azikiwe stated.
He also commended the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) for its support in promoting public education and responsible consumption.
Sachet Alcohol Below 200ml to Be Phased Out
As part of its mission to regulate alcohol consumption and safeguard public health, NAFDAC confirmed that all sachet alcoholic drinks below 200ml will be phased out completely after December 31, 2025.
