Kogi Secures 15 Federal Mining Licenses to Drive Economic Diversification

In a bold step toward diversifying its economy and reducing dependence on federal allocations, the Federal Government has granted the Kogi State Government 15 mining licenses to harness the state’s vast solid mineral resources.

The announcement was made in Lokoja during the International Conference, Exhibition, and 25th Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institution of Metallurgical, Mining and Material Engineering (NI3ME), a branch of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. Governor Usman Ododo, represented by his deputy Joel Oyinbo, described the development as a strategic move to spur economic growth and accelerate development in the state.

The licenses cover a range of mineral deposits, including limestone, coal, tin, iron ore, and bauxite. With these approvals, Kogi is set to build a strong foundation for sustainable mining activities that will generate employment, increase revenue, and contribute to the state’s socio-economic advancement.

Governor Ododo emphasized his administration’s commitment to establishing a regulated and responsible mining environment. He noted that the state government is working with the State Assembly to pass laws aimed at curbing illegal mining, supporting artisanal and small-scale miners, preventing environmental degradation, and promoting sustainable mining practices.

He further disclosed plans to engage and train 25,000 youths in the mining and minerals sector as part of a broader empowerment strategy.

In his remarks, NI3ME National Chairman, Professor Abdulrahman Asipita Salawu, expressed concern over Nigeria’s long-standing overdependence on oil, which he said has hindered the growth of other critical sectors. He stressed the urgent need to refocus national efforts on developing the metals and solid minerals industries.

According to him, revitalizing these sectors would not only generate employment and improve living standards but also stimulate growth in other areas such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. He stated that the conference was aimed at laying out a viable strategy for sustainable development in the industry.
