Kano TikToker Murja Kunya Sentenced to Six Months in Prison for Naira Abuse

A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced popular TikTok influencer Murja Kunya to six months in prison for abusing the Nigerian currency.
The conviction was secured by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kano Zonal Command, before Justice Simon Amobeda on Wednesday.
Kunya was found guilty of spraying Naira notes in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace — a violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the nation’s currency.
Initially arrested in January 2025, she was released on administrative bail but failed to appear in court, prompting the EFCC to launch a manhunt. She was re-arrested on March 16, 2025, following weeks of surveillance.
During her arraignment on May 20, Kunya pleaded guilty to the amended charge. In his ruling, Justice Amobeda sentenced her to six months in prison without an option of fine.
