JUST IN: White Smoke Rises as 267th Pope Chosen to Lead Catholic Church

Vatican City — History was made Thursday evening as white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signalling the election of a new pope — the 267th leader of the Catholic Church.

Thousands of faithful erupted into cheers and applause in St. Peter’s Square as the unmistakable white plume drifted into the Roman sky, accompanied by the resonant peal of bells announcing that the conclave of 133 cardinals had reached a decision.

The newly elected pontiff, whose identity remains under wraps until his first official appearance, succeeds Pope Francis, the Argentine reformer who passed away last month after a 12-year papacy that left a profound impact on the global Church.

In the coming moments, the new pope will emerge from the famed balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Introduced in Latin with the iconic phrase “Habemus Papam” — “We have a pope” — he will then deliver his first Urbi et Orbi blessing, addressing both the city and the world.

But the road ahead is formidable. The new Holy Father steps into the role during a period of deep internal challenges and global instability. He will inherit the burden of confronting clergy abuse scandals, managing the Vatican’s complex finances, and healing ideological rifts within the Church itself.

The conclave, the largest in history, gathered cardinals from five continents and 70 countries — reflecting the Church’s global character more than ever before. Before entering the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday, the cardinals were reminded by their dean, Giovanni Battista Re, of the weight of unity and spiritual leadership required in this decisive hour.

Names floated as possible successors included Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline of France, Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, and Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States, among others. Whether the cardinals chose a progressive reformer, a traditionalist, or a diplomatic unifier remains to be seen.

As the world holds its breath, the Catholic faithful — numbering over 1.4 billion — await the first words and vision of their new shepherd.
