GTBank hikes SMS alert fee to ₦6

The Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has announced an increase in its SMS transaction alert fee from ₦4 to ₦6 per message, effective Thursday, 1 May 2025.
The bank disclosed this in a notice sent to customers on Wednesday, attributing the adjustment to a recent upward review in telecommunication rates by service providers.
The revised fee applies to all customers who receive transaction alerts through SMS.
Also, Ecobank Nigeria has announced a revision of its SMS notification charges, increasing the cost from N5 to N6 per message, effective May 1, 2025.
The bank said the upward review, communicated to customers via SMS, is attributed to new tariff structures.
Meanwhile, the GTB said its decision comes amid growing operational costs in the banking and telecom sectors, which have seen several institutions adjust service charges in response to inflation and regulatory changes.
“Dear Valued Customer,” the notice reads, “Please be informed that effective Thursday, May 1 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from ₦4 to ₦6 per message.”
“This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers.”
“Kindly note that transaction alerts are important and help you keep track and stay in control of activities on your account.”
“If you prefer not to receive transaction alerts via SMS, you can update your preferences by completing the transaction alert form on our website and sending it to gtbankmailsupport@gtbank.com.”
